膏药是祖国医药学中的一个重要组成部分,是中医五大药物剂型--丸,散,膏,丹,汤之一。膏药疗法更是祖国医学中一种独特的中医外治疗法,已有两千年的历史,并广泛应用于治疗各种病症。

膏,顾名思义,就是粘稠之物。膏剂是常温下为固体、半固体、半流体的一类剂型。由药物和基质两个部分组成(也有不用基质的)。缪希雍《炮炙大法》说:“膏者,熬成稠膏也”;龚云林《寿世保元》:“膏者胶也”;都反映了膏剂的形态。

膏剂是祖国医学的一类古老剂型,其渊源久远。早在《山海经》中就记载了羯羊脂,用于涂搽皮肤以防皲裂,可以说是最原始的膏药;《黄帝内经》中记述了“豕膏”,“痈发于嗌中……合豕膏,冷食,三日而已。……涂以豕膏,六日已。”《内经?至真要大论》:“摩之、浴之、薄之、劫之、开之、发之,适事为度。”其中所指的“摩之、薄之都是后代膏药的滥觞”。南北朝时称膏剂为“膏方”或“薄”。

唐代也有“摩膏”的称谓。明清时代将唐代的“煎”改称为“膏滋”或“膏”,并纳入了膏剂的范畴。这样,膏剂的品种更加丰富了。随着历史的发展,膏剂的用途逐渐扩大,不但治外病用膏,治内病也用膏。清吴师机《理淪骈文》,对膏剂的方药、应用和制备工艺均进行了专门的论述,并创造出了白膏药、松香膏药等膏剂类型。近年来,随着透皮给药系统(TDDS)的研究迅速发展,外用膏剂的应用范围也更为广阔。
