He believes that due to the relatively controllable operation model in the logistics field and the shortage of manpower in the logistics industry, autonomous driving has taken the lead in commercializing in the logistics field and put it into large-scale use. In the next three to five years, there will be more than 200,000 express unmanned vehicles deployed in the logistics industry.
Cainiao is accelerating the commercialization of unmanned vehicles in the express logistics industry. At present, the AutoDrive platform and perfect vehicle service guarantee system independently built by the Ali team have ensured the safe operation of Cainiao unmanned vehicles on open roads, and have obtained the right of way in many places across the country.
In a comprehensive express outlet in Yuhang District, Hangzhou, there are more than 20 Cainiao unmanned vehicles in a fleet for terminal delivery, each with a loading capacity of 5 cubic meters. As the largest express driverless vehicle fleet with a single network load, these driverless vehicles not only undertake the delivery of packages to the post station, but also undertake the package collection service from customers to outlets, realizing the efficient combination of collection and delivery. At present, more than 30% of the parcels at the site are delivered by driverless vehicles, which are connected in series through the site, and bicycles transport at least 1,500 parcels per day. The multi-vehicle combination operation also allows the overall efficiency of the fleet to be improved much more than the efficiency of bicycles.
It is reported that Cainiao is one of the first logistics enterprises in China to invest in the development and operation of L4-level unmanned logistics vehicles. As early as 2016, it launched the first generation of terminal delivery robots, and a number of algorithm technologies have won international awards. As of 2024, Cainiao driverless vehicles have been operating on semi-open roads in colleges and universities in more than 20 provinces across the country, with a total mileage of over 5 million kilometers, and more than 40 million orders have been delivered, accumulating rich practical experience for fully open road driverless vehicle distribution.
During the summit, Li Qiang also said that the current national and local laws and regulations have relatively high acceptance of autonomous vehicles in the logistics field, and the speed of opening up the right of way will be faster than most people expected. At present, dozens of cities across the country allow large-capacity express driverless vehicles on the road, so it is necessary to speed up the process of large-scale operation of driverless vehicles on open roads and actively invest in industrial transformation.
