The opening ceremony of the Djibouti Multi-functional Port (Phase I) was held in Djibouti City on the 24th. Djibouti President Guelleh and a number of dignitaries in Djibouti, Chinese Ambassador to Djibouti Fu Huaqiang and representatives of Chinese enterprises, as well as dignitaries from Somalia, Ethiopia and other countries attended. The Djibouti Multi-functional Port (Phase I) project was undertaken by China State Construction and is the largest port project undertaken by a Chinese construction company in Northeast Africa to date. The project officially started in August 2014. The port has an annual designed cargo handling capacity of 7.08 million tons and a container handling capacity of 200,000 TEUs. Since the start of the project, the builders from China have been facing the extreme environment of people and land, the high temperature "off the table", the extreme shortage of living resources, and the import of production resources. They have carefully organized the construction with Chinese responsibility and Chinese standards. They have completed the main terminal and all the houses and road yards in the contract at an amazing speed, laying a solid foundation for the trial operation and official opening of the port area. Djibouti is located in the Horn of Africa, which is an important connection point of the Asian, African and European markets and an important node of the "21st Century Maritime Silk Road". The smooth opening of the Duhale Multifunctional Port (Phase I) will provide an important transportation foothold for Chinese-funded enterprises to expand the African continent market, and will also boost Djibouti's economic development.
