5G technology can do things that are simply not possible today
The development of communication in the past 10 years, the most important product is the smart phone. What technology will take us to the next stage in the future? 5G technology has become a hot topic of discussion among the guests of this year's Boao Forum for Asia.
Chen Wenqi, chairperson and CEO of VIA Electronics, said that 5G is indeed a very important technology. On the one hand, 5G uses new communication technology, which is combined with the original 4G technology, so that the communication standard of 5G is high frequency, and there are some small intermediate frequencies. In addition, you can see some very interesting progress, that is, 5G realizes very low latency. In the past, people said that LTE, which is the era of 4G, cannot achieve low latency. Now we can see many new applications.
Speaking of some new applications, Chen Wenqi said that 5G can be seen in many application scenarios, such as the original SDN software-defined network, and some network cloudification, which can make the grid very flexible and meet various human needs. At the same time, it can also meet the new Internet of Things and connect various devices. "I am very excited to see the development of the future era."
Ge Yue, global vice president of Apple, believes that the development trend of 5G is mainly focused on three areas. First, it can achieve huge data storage capacity, such as AR/VR. These technologies can become a reality with the emergence of 5G, after all, it requires a huge amount of data storage. Second, it can achieve extremely low latency, which can help a variety of industries, such as multi-functional medical devices. It is precisely because of this extremely low latency that medical devices can be remotely controlled, and various data can be fed back in real time. Therefore, with the emergence of these new technologies, there will be various possibilities that can be fed back almost in real time. Third, the interconnection of machines can enable a lot of sensors or smart meters, water meters, and other smart devices that you can imagine to be connected, all because of 5G technology.
"5G can achieve speeds of 1-5 milliseconds," said Leif JOHANSSON, chairperson of Ericsson. Applications in the medical field can make very effective use of this ultra-low latency. The advantage of 5G is that it can really make some extremely small robots a reality, including AI, AR/VR, or some intelligent robots, capable of doing things that are simply not possible now.
VIVO founder Shen Wei said that for 5G research and development, VIVO started its layout very early. By the end of last year, it had established six R & D centers around the world, including Dongguan, Shenzhen, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Beijing, and San Diego in the United States. These R & D centers have different missions, such as the Hangzhou Research Institute, which mainly handles image algorithms.
"Last year, we started to study the key technologies of 5G antenna and radio frequency, and joined the global 3GPP organization. As an end point manufacturer, we are one of the end point manufacturers with the largest technical contribution." Shen Wei revealed that this year VIVO plans to complete the research and development of 5G experimental machines by the end of the year, cooperate with operators to carry out network tests, and finally plan to complete the pre-commercial end point to operators next year, and achieve mass production in 2020.
